Scrivener - Outlining a novel

I just came across a post I did some time ago that I thought might still be of interest and is something I should really be more disciplined in putting in place now.

Well, my attempt at wrapping my head around planning a novel has begun with a flurry of electronic input. As you can see below, I have attempted a chapter breakdown of my next book with projected targets, given the story mapping I am working to.

This program is pretty much everything I have been looking for for years. I must however, point out that I am still using a trusty pad of paper and pen to get some random thoughts down. I also use iPad and my HTC smart phone if something comes to me when I’m on the move, the difference now though is that I have Scrivener to note everything down in so that what needs to be to include and the targets versus status is all captured.

There is some functionality that is not hugely intuitive. For example, the word count functionality; this is a little frustrating sometimes, as ensuring files that hold concepts I do not wish to be include in the overall word count can be confusing; after some playing though I have just about got there. [More on word counts in the next blog].

The really great thing I am noticing about the software, is that you can use as much or as little of the functionality as you like. My nature is to delve in and try and explore software inch by inch, spending hours in front of YouTube; headphones on, mulling over menus and options: pausing, playing, playing, pausing.

The next bit to get to grips with will be the word count functions, as this is the thing that gives me hope, watching the bars creeping up – or disappointingly downwards – if I delete sections is what drives me, as a competitive person seeing the bar status really spurs me on.

Please check back to read a little on word count functionality soon. I will also be looking at the compiling functionality for those interested in the final product options soon.

N.B. I have written 3000 words in two days of using the software, now on the next 300 word target which resets at 12am each night. I have character profiles written and setting description and images as research for some of the places that feature in my book. All this info is to hand to refer to.

In summary all is looking positive so far.
